Island (vgl. mhd. îs und isl. ís – Eis) ist mit rund 103.000 km² (Landfläche: 100.250 km², Wasserfläche: 2750 km², mit Fischereizone 758.000 km²) – nach dem Vereinigten Königreich – der flächenmäßig zweitgrößte Inselstaat Europas. Die im Nordatlantik liegende Hauptinsel ist die größte Vulkaninsel der Erde und befindet sich knapp südlich des nördlichen Polarkreises. Seit Sommer 2010 ist Island EU-Beitrittskandidat. Iceland, officially called Republic of Iceland and sometimes its counterpart Lýðveldið Ísland in Icelandic (for example this is a part of the name of the Constitution of Iceland, Stjórnarskrá lýðveldisins Íslands). It is a Nordic European island country in the North Atlantic Ocean, on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The country has a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mi).[10] The capital and the largest city is Reykjavík,[11] with the surrounding areas in the southwestern region of the country being home to two-thirds of the country's population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior mainly consists of a plateau characterised by sand fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Ísland er eyríki í Norður-Atlantshafi á milli Grænlands, Færeyja og Noregs. Ísland er um 103.000 km² að stærð; það er önnur stærsta eyja í Evrópu á eftir Bretlandi og sú átjánda stærsta í heimi. Á Íslandi búa um það bil 320.000 manns. Höfuðborg landsins er Reykjavík. Á síðari hluta 20. aldar jókst þjóðarframleiðsla Íslendinga til muna og innviðir og velferðarkerfi landsins efldust. Árið 2007 var Ísland þróaðasta land heims samkvæmt vísitölu SÞ um þróun lífsgæða, en árið 2008 hófst efnahagskreppa á Íslandi.
